I’ve been keeping eye and ear out for reports of the arrival of long-tail ducks. Yesterday (December 13th) a multitude of waterfowl, primarily long-tailed ducks were gallivanting in the water behind the Travelodge Hotel, in downtown Burlington.

Amid the throng were two new species for me, the surf scoter and the black scoter. The latter was discovered as I went through my pictures today. Woo hoo!

The waterfowl would fly a short distance stopping short of the pier. This went on for some time until I noted they moved to deeper waters, thus signalling the arrival of two great black-backed gulls. After the gulls left the vicinity the waterfowl returned closer to shore.

About 50 ruddy ducks were in the waters off Spencer Smith Park.

On the land, the owner of this dog intentionally moved toward a group of Canada geese. This was obviously sport to him. I’m sure if the geese retaliated every news outlet would run the story. This made me angry.

The geese seemed no worse for wear but I’m sure they were frightened.

On a more pleasant note, a wedding party was on the pier. I have intentionally obscured their faces. Perfect conditions for a December wedding. I wish them a lifetime of happiness!
